Chalcanthite is a hydrated blue crystalline form of copper sulfate, commonly found in the late-stage oxidation zones of copper deposits. Due to its ready solubility, chalcanthite is more frequently found in greater abundance in arid regions. While chalcanthite does occur in nature, and is usually as a blue massive or crusty material. Well-formed crystals of more than a few millimeters are exceptionally rare. It is, however, quite easy to grow chalcanthite specimens in a laboratory.
